SOFTware, eh?

So in an effort to get another week up and running on the blog I thought I would ask what software everyone is using/learning/failing at in their respective office environments. Is anyone using some of the 3d modeling software that generates construction documents based on the model?

Here we/I use:
AutoDevil LT 2006
Rhino
Sketchup
Struc-Calc (this one is especially fun to learn)

Just the standard:
Desktop, sketch-up, some formZ, photoshop. We hire out consultants for most of our analysis because California has such crazy restrictions and requirements.

I have been using Excel more than ever to track product information, consultants, schedules, etc.

Oh and...we still draft by hand for almost everything until we are ready to really get into the CD's. This is the best part of the job. Any drafting before CDs is pretty basic and is usually drawn on afterwards.

we are currently on the standardless-chaos plan, or free-for-all:use-what-you-use-best plan... depends how you look at it.

theres the usual rhinos, viz/maxes, mayans - but i must say that renderings are not used much. moreso, the style around here is large foam core.

whats the word on revit though?

not sure, you have to call them on the phone and have them create an activation code for you. I could get you the install file but you would have to find a crack for it. v5 or v6.

I took GS and I am taking Lateral in a couple weeks.....they are my weakest subjects so I am taking them first (so if I fail one I can take others while I wait the 6 mo.) But it was a 3 hour structures test and it sucked.....hahaha. The best things to study are those Archiflash cards and the ALS manuals. they cover alot. The ARE fourm is a good place to go hear about the horror stories and get good advise. But they suck, we don't get paid enough to go through all this CRAP!! I am getting my contractors licence (only one test) hahaha

are you really going for the contractors? that would be sweet.

it seems like no one wants to talk about tests - on the blogger or in my office, so i feel like i am helen kellerin' my way through it. i dont know if the taboo'ity is an ego-architect thing, or if no one really cares about licensure... but anyways, i am a fan of more dialogue about the tests even though (or because) they definitely suck multiple arses.

who else is applying or planning on applying for an AZ? i had the mech/elec exam last night and have been using the ohara/ballast books available on amazon to study. is ALS the same as the kaplan books?

i think why you aren't hearing about it more on the blog is that most of us aren't going for our license in AZ and we don't qualify to take the tests yet. Doug, why don't you join the ranks and talk about them in about a year with the rest of us.
